Powai is one of Mumbai’s densest education pockets. Two national institutes, a cluster of business schools, degree colleges and several of the city’s better-known schools all sit within a few kilometres — which means a steady flow of visiting parents, candidates, examiners and families through the year.
We host them regularly, and the pattern is consistent enough to plan around.
The institutions in this pocket
Higher education
- IIT Bombay — the largest landmark in Powai. Convocation, admissions, festivals and conferences; covered separately in our IIT Bombay visitor guide.
- IIM Mumbai (formerly NITIE) — management education, executive programmes and MDPs. See our IIM Mumbai guide.
- SDA Bocconi Asia Center — the Asian campus of the Italian business school, running postgraduate and executive programmes. Participants often come from other cities and other countries.
- ICFAI Business School — management programmes, with the admission and placement cycles that come with them.
- Chandrabhan Sharma College — degree college, busiest around admissions and examinations.
- S. M. Shetty College — degree college, same seasonal rhythm.
Schools
- Hiranandani Foundation School — Hiranandani Gardens.
- Podar International School
- Nahar International School
- Bombay Scottish School
Who comes, and when
Parents at admission time. The single biggest group. School admissions and college cut-off rounds bring families in from other cities, often for two or three days of interviews, document verification and waiting. What they want is simple: a clean room, a fair rate, and staff who understand it is a stressful trip rather than a holiday.
Families of boarding and out-of-city students. Visits during the term, parents’ days, and the trips at the start and end of an academic year when a room is needed while accommodation is sorted out.
Candidates for entrance exams and interviews. One or two nights, usually anxious, needing a quiet room and an early, reliable breakfast.
Executive programme participants at the business schools — mid-career professionals here for a residential course lasting anywhere from a few days to several weeks. These are among our longest-staying guests.
Examiners, external faculty and inspection teams — short institutional visits, always needing a proper GST invoice.
Sports meets, annual days and inter-school events — visiting teams and accompanying parents, usually as a group booking.
Alumni returning for reunions, who want rooms near each other.
Getting around from Saki Vihar Road
We are on Saki Vihar Road, opposite the lane of L&T Gate No. 6, which puts most of these campuses within a short drive.
- Morning events start early. Reporting times for exams, interviews and school functions are usually 8 or 9 AM, which collides with Powai’s worst traffic. Allow 30–40 minutes rather than the 10 the map suggests.
- Confirm the gate or building. The larger campuses have multiple entrances, and "IIT Bombay" or "Hiranandani" alone will not get a driver to the right door.
- Autos are plentiful on Saki Vihar Road; app cabs work well here.
- Ask us to book a cab the night before for anything before 8 AM. On an exam morning you do not want to be negotiating with an auto driver.
- Mumbai Airport (T2) is roughly 25 minutes, which helps for families flying in.
What visiting families ask us for
- A quiet room. Say so at booking — we will place you away from the corridor where we can.
- Early breakfast before a reporting time. Buffet breakfast is served each morning at our in-house restaurant.
- Rooms that sleep three. Two parents and a student is the most common configuration; the Banyan Trio takes up to 3 guests.
- Longer stays at sensible rates. Ask for weekly rates on the Teak Studio if you are here for more than a few nights.
- Luggage storage on checkout day when a ceremony runs past 11 AM and the flight is in the evening.
- GST invoices — on every stay, with company or institute billing supported.
One thing worth planning for
Powai’s academic calendars overlap. IIT Bombay’s convocation, IIM Mumbai’s programme intakes, college admission rounds and school admission season do not coordinate with each other — and when two of them land in the same fortnight, the whole neighbourhood’s room inventory tightens at once.
The practical consequence: book as soon as your date is confirmed rather than waiting for the final schedule. Families who wait for certainty routinely pay more for less choice.
Which room suits which visit
- Candidate, one or two nights: the Cedar Deluxe — twin beds, work desk. Maximum 2 guests.
- Two parents and a student: the Banyan Trio, up to 3 guests in one room.
- Executive programme or a stay of weeks: the Teak Studio with kitchenette, on weekly or monthly rates.
- A more comfortable family stay: The Mahogany Soak, our signature studio with a full bathtub.
Frequently asked
Which schools and colleges are near Lake Bloom Residency?
IIT Bombay, IIM Mumbai (formerly NITIE), SDA Bocconi Asia Center, ICFAI Business School, Chandrabhan Sharma College and S. M. Shetty College, along with Hiranandani Foundation School, Podar International School, Nahar International School and Bombay Scottish School.
Can two parents and a child share one room?
Yes — the Banyan Trio accommodates up to 3 guests. The other room types take a maximum of 2 each.
Do you have rates for stays of several weeks?
Yes. Weekly and monthly rates are available on the Teak Studio, which has a kitchenette — useful for executive programme participants and families staying through an academic transition.
Can you arrange an early cab for an exam or interview?
Yes. Tell the front desk the night before; the desk is staffed 24×7.
When should I book?
As soon as your date is confirmed. Powai’s academic calendars overlap, and room availability across the neighbourhood tightens when two campuses have events in the same fortnight.
