IIM Mumbai — the institute most of Powai still calls NITIE — sits a short drive from us, and it generates a very particular kind of visitor. Not tourists, and not quite the usual business traveller either: mid-career managers on a two-week programme, candidates in for interviews, parents at convocation, recruiters during placements, and faculty in for a conference.
We host all of them. Here is the practical guide.
NITIE, IIM Mumbai — and why the old name still matters
The institute was known for decades as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) before becoming IIM Mumbai. Both names remain in circulation: alumni say NITIE, official correspondence says IIM Mumbai, and older signage and directions can use either. If a driver looks blank at one, try the other — it is the same campus in Powai.
Who visits, and what each group needs
Executive education and MDP participants. The group we host most. Working professionals sent by their employer for a short programme — anything from three days to several weeks. They arrive with a laptop and a full working schedule that has not paused just because they are in a classroom. They need reliable Wi-Fi for evening calls, a desk, a GST invoice their employer will accept, and quiet. Several stay a fortnight or more, which is where our weekly rates come in.
Admission interview candidates. One or two nights, high stakes, usually solo. A quiet room and an early breakfast matter more than anything else.
Parents and families at convocation. The happiest visitors of the year, often three or four travelling together from another state, often including grandparents. The Banyan Trio exists for exactly this.
Recruiters during placement season. Company panels arriving together, sharing rooms, wanting one consolidated invoice and a single point of contact.
Visiting faculty and conference delegates. Three to seven nights, always reimbursed, always needing the invoice to be correct.
Alumni. Reunions bring back groups who want rooms near each other and somewhere to sit and talk late.
Getting to campus
We are on Saki Vihar Road, opposite the lane of L&T Gate No. 6. The IIM Mumbai campus is a short drive — a matter of minutes outside peak hours, longer at Powai’s morning crush.
- Morning sessions: allow 30 minutes for a 9 AM start. Powai’s traffic between 8:30 and 10 is unforgiving.
- Confirm the building, not just the campus. An executive education block and an academic department can be different drop-off points.
- Autos are available on Saki Vihar Road; app cabs are reliable here. For a group of three or four, one cab each way costs very little split between you.
- Late finishes are routine during residential programmes — our front desk is staffed 24×7.
For executive education participants specifically
If you are here for an MDP or a longer residential programme, a few things are worth knowing before you book:
- Ask for weekly or monthly rates. A three-week programme booked night by night is the expensive way to do it. Tell us the programme dates and we will quote the block.
- The Teak Studio has a kitchenette — which matters more than you expect on week three, when you want tea at 11 PM or something simple instead of another restaurant meal.
- Send the exact billing entity and GSTIN at booking. Corporate sponsors are strict about invoices; getting it right at the start saves a reimbursement argument later.
- Tell us it is a programme. Knowing your class timings means breakfast is ready before you leave and the desk is not surprised by a 10 PM return.
- Laundry matters on a long stay — ask the desk.
Which room suits which visit
- Interview candidate, one or two nights: the Cedar Deluxe — twin beds, work desk, fast Wi-Fi. Maximum 2 guests.
- Family at convocation, three sharing: the Banyan Trio, up to 3 guests in one room.
- Executive programme, a fortnight or more: the Teak Studio with kitchenette, on weekly or monthly rates.
- Visiting faculty or a senior guest: The Mahogany Soak, our signature studio with a full bathtub.
Booking around campus season
- Book when the programme is confirmed, not when the joining letter arrives. Powai tightens around convocation, admission rounds and programme intakes — and IIT Bombay’s calendar overlaps, which squeezes the whole neighbourhood at once.
- Add a buffer night. Programmes extend, interviews get rescheduled, flights move.
- Group bookings on WhatsApp. Send names, dates and sharing arrangement in one message rather than making separate bookings — we hold the rooms together and consolidate billing.
While you are here
The L&T gate cluster opposite us has a run of everyday restaurants within walking distance — see our Powai restaurant guide. For an evening out, the Hiranandani lounges are about ten minutes away; our Powai nightlife guide covers them. Powai Lake is close by for an early morning walk, which participants on long programmes tend to appreciate.
Frequently asked
How far is Lake Bloom Residency from IIM Mumbai?
A short drive — minutes outside peak hours, longer during Powai’s morning traffic. Both are in Powai.
Is IIM Mumbai the same as NITIE?
Yes. The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) is now IIM Mumbai. Both names are still in common use for the same Powai campus.
Do you offer rates for executive education participants staying several weeks?
Yes. Ask for weekly or monthly rates on the Teak Studio, which has a kitchenette. Share your programme dates and we will quote the full block.
Can you invoice my employer directly?
GST invoices are issued on every stay with company billing supported. Send the exact billing name and GSTIN at the time of booking.
Can four of us travelling for convocation stay together?
The Banyan Trio takes up to 3 guests in one room; for four, we would allot two rooms. Tell us the group and we will arrange rooms near each other.
