Powai is IIT Bombay's neighbourhood, and the campus sets the rhythm of the year here. Convocation week, admission and counselling rounds, the December festival season, conference weeks, viva and interview cycles — each brings a wave of visitors who all need the same thing: somewhere close, quiet and predictable to sleep, without paying resort rates for the privilege.
We are a short drive from the campus on Saki Vihar Road, and we host these visitors constantly. This is the practical guide we give them.

Who comes to IIT Bombay, and what each group needs
Parents and families. The biggest group by far, and the one under the most pressure. Admissions and counselling rounds mean a family travelling from another state, often with a nervous teenager, sometimes for two or three days of uncertainty. Convocation is the happier version of the same trip — parents, siblings, sometimes grandparents, all arriving for one ceremony. What they need is simple: a clean room, a reliable rate, an easy commute to campus, and staff who will answer a phone at 11 PM.
Candidates for interviews and vivas. Usually solo, usually one or two nights, almost always anxious. A quiet room and a working desk matter more than anything else in the building. Early checkout is common — a 7 AM departure for a 9 AM slot.
Visiting faculty, researchers and conference delegates. Longer stays, three to seven nights, and almost always reimbursed — so a GST invoice with correct company or institute billing is non-negotiable. Reliable Wi-Fi that holds a video call matters, because they present, join calls with their home institution, and work at night.
Recruiters and company teams. Placement season brings company panels who arrive together and share rooms to control cost. They travel as a group and want one point of contact rather than four separate bookings.
Alumni. Reunions and campus events bring back groups of friends who often want rooms near each other, and who care more about being able to sit and talk late than about hotel facilities.
Getting to campus from here
Lake Bloom Residency is on Saki Vihar Road, opposite the lane of L&T Gate No. 6. IIT Bombay's Powai campus is a short run from here — typically ten to twenty minutes by road depending on the hour and which campus gate you need.
- Confirm your gate before you travel. The campus is large and has multiple entrances. A convocation at the Convocation Hall and an interview at a department building can mean very different drop-off points. Ask your host which gate, and give that to the driver.
- Morning ceremonies: leave 35–40 minutes before your reporting time. Powai's morning traffic is unforgiving, and campus entry queues build on ceremony days.
- Autos are available on Saki Vihar Road; app cabs are reliable in this pocket. For a family of four, one cab each way costs very little split between you.
- Late returns: our front desk is staffed 24×7, so an evening event that runs long is not a problem.
Why visitors base themselves on this side rather than beside the campus
The hotels immediately around the campus and Powai Lake are largely five-star properties — excellent, and priced accordingly. During convocation and admission weeks they fill early and their rates rise with demand.
Staying a few minutes further out changes the arithmetic considerably. You are still in Powai, still ten to twenty minutes from the gate, and you are not paying convention-hotel rates for a room you will barely see. For a family staying three nights around a counselling round, that difference is real money.
It also helps that this is a working neighbourhood rather than a hotel strip — there is somewhere to eat late, and it is quiet at night.
Which room suits which visit
- A candidate, one or two nights: the Cedar Deluxe — twin beds, work desk, fast Wi-Fi. Maximum 2 guests.
- Parents plus the student, or three sharing: the Banyan Trio takes up to 3 guests in one room — the most economical option for a family.
- Visiting faculty or a week-long research visit: the Teak Studio with a kitchenette, on weekly rates.
- A longer family stay or a senior guest: The Mahogany Soak, our signature studio and the only room in the house with a full bathtub.
Booking around campus season: what actually helps
- Book the moment your date is confirmed. Powai's rooms tighten sharply around convocation, counselling rounds and the December festival week. Families who wait for the "final" schedule routinely pay more.
- Add a buffer night. Counselling rounds run late and get extended; interview slots move. An extra night booked in advance costs far less than a night booked in a panic.
- Tell us it is a campus visit. Knowing you have an 8 AM reporting time means we can arrange breakfast timing and have a cab ready rather than you hunting for one at dawn.
- Travelling as a group? Send the whole list on WhatsApp instead of making separate bookings. We will hold the rooms together and bill them the way your institute or company needs.
Practical notes for families travelling from out of state
- Carry original photo ID for every guest — including the student. This is a legal requirement at Indian hotels, and photocopies are not accepted in place of originals.
- Mumbai Airport (T2) is roughly 25 minutes away, so staggered arrivals are easy to manage.
- Breakfast is served at our in-house restaurant each morning — useful when you have a ceremony to reach.
- Luggage can be left with the front desk on checkout day if your flight is late and the ceremony is not.
