A little history
Built in the 1890s as a water supply scheme, the lake never quite worked for drinking water — and Mumbai got a landscape instead. Today it's the visual anchor of Powai, ringed by the promenade, IIT Bombay's campus and the Hiranandani skyline.
When the light is best
Sunrise, without contest. Before 7 AM the promenade is joggers and birdlife, the water is still, and the skyline catches the first light. Sunset is the social hour — busier, warmer, better for people-watching.
The birdlife and the crocodiles
Herons, egrets, kingfishers and cormorants work the edges year-round. And yes — the lake genuinely has marsh crocodiles; you'll almost certainly never see one from the promenade, but the folklore is founded.
Monsoon at the lake
July to September the lake fills to its brim and occasionally overflows at the weir — a minor local spectacle. The hills behind go green and the whole basin earns its postcard.
